This programme addresses the challenges face by our older people. We co-ordinate this programme in County Mayo, making our county a better place to grow old in.
We work to improve the services and facilities that our older people have identified as being important to them, and the wider community, as they live healthy and active lives.
Our projects, in conjunction with other organisations, include:
- Outdoor Spaces and Buildings
- Respect and Social Inclusion
- Social Participation
- Communication and Education
- Civic Participation and Employment
- Health and Wellbeing
The key contributors to this programme are the Age Friendly Alliance and Mayo Older Peoples Council.
Our Age Friendly Alliance brings together older people, service providers and businesses to change thinking about aging and how services to our older people are planned and delivered.
Along with the Chief Executive of Mayo County Council members include the Gardaí, the HSE, GMIT, representatives from Mayo’s Older Peoples Council and both the Business and Service Providers Fora, Mayo Sports Partnership, Mayo Public Participation Network and the Local Development Companies (Mayo North East and South West Mayo Development).
The Alliance oversees the implementation of our Age Friendly Strategy, a five-year plan which sets out actions that provide a vision for a county where our older people are supported, connected and valued for their contribution to community and family life. Developed in consultation with our older people, the strategy, which was launched by the Alliance in 2016, is now in its final year.
Another key element is Mayo Older Peoples Council, a group that represents our older people, and promotes their inclusion in all areas of community life. Working in partnership with the Age Friendly Alliance, the Older Peoples Council generates new ideas for age friendly projects to address issues ranging from isolation and loneliness to fitness and active ageing.
