Cosaint Shibhialta

Join the Civil Defence

Volunteers come from a wide range of backgrounds. Any adult can apply to become a member. Volunteers are taught a wide range of skills such as first aid, searching for missing people, boating skills, pumping flood waters and radio communications.

Volunteers are expected to attend for training for 2 hours per week and then to make themselves available for duties such as providing first aid cover at sporting events. Volunteers may be called out at short notice to deal with bad weather, to search for missing people or to help with other emergencies.

What volunteers get from Civil Defence.

  • Training – our training is at a very high standard and is independently certified by bodies such as  QQI and PHECC. These qualifications may be useful in your career.
  • Personal development – our volunteers get involved in a wide range of activities and develop many useful personal skills.
  • Friendships – working with other volunteers is a great way of meeting new people.
  • Giving something back -our volunteers know they are helping their communities often in times of great need.
  • Uniforms and equipment are all provided.

Civil Defence Units are located in each county in the Republic of Ireland and the Mayo Unit can be contacted here
