Location: Ballina Arts Centre Foyer
Medium: sculpture, Date: March 2012
Materials: Aluminium, brass, steel
Dimensions: 1 X 300mm diameter, 3 X 500mm diameter and 1 X 750mm diameter.

‘Minefield’ is a large sculptural installation of five aluminium, brass and steel ‘mines’ which were made following a residency the artist undertook at NASA Kennedy Space Centre in Florida.

The works began as hypothetical drawings and animations, then moved to a series of films shot in zero gravity, and then into a series of sculptural objects that became known as Weapons of Mass Consumption. The work was exhibited at the Royal Hibernian Academy to great critical acclaim in the 2009 ‘Futures’ exhibition, and provides an iconic permanent installation in the entrance to Ballina Arts Centre.

‘Minefield’ was commissioned by Mayo County Council and was funded by the Department of Environment, Heritage and Local Government under the Percent for art scheme.
