National Industrial Action by SIPTU Retained Fire Fighters

Date: 16-06-2023

Mayo County Council is continuing to engage with local Retained Fire Fighters to maintain a response to emergency calls during the industrial action which entered the second phase on June 13th. This has resulted in approximately 50% of the Fire Stations being ‘off the run’ each day. On each day there are 5 stations that are not fully operational in the county while the Brigade units at Achill Sound and Belmullet have 50% of the crew available to respond at any time.

Whilst the industrial action has resulted in a change in fire service communications procedures, the Fire Service has continued to respond to emergency calls for assistance.

Mayo County Council wishes to assure the public that every effort is being made to reduce the risk to communities during the dispute and an effective contingency plan is in place to ensure public safety. The Council will keep members of the public informed.

All households and businesses should ensure they have working smoke alarms and should continue to use 999 or 112 calls in the case of an emergency.
