Aisling an Iarthar - A Mirage in the West

May 04 @ 09:00 pm - May 04 @ 11:55 pm

On May Day 1824 William Henry Carter, absentee landlord, arrived with his entourage into the barony of Erris on the newly completed road from Castlebar, the first road ever built in to this vast wilderness region. He immediately set about building a market town for the district. Belmullet town rose swiftly, remarked by its planner Patrick Knight as, ‘raised up as if by magic, a town in the wilderness, an oasis in the desert’.

On Saturday May 4th the renowned LUXE Landscape Theatre Company will artistically reinterpret this historic tale. With the community’s involvement a lantern procession will follow the route of that first carriage from land to sea.

Saturday May 4th, 9pm, Carter Square Belmullet.

Proudly supported by Fáilte Ireland and the Department of Foreign Affairs through Home to Mayo, a Mayo.ie Initiatuve.

Ar Lá Bealtaine 1824 tháinig William Henry Carter, tiarna talún neamhláithreachta, agus a chomhluadar isteach i mbarúntacht Iorrais ar an mbóthar nua-chríochnaithe ó Chaisleán an Bharraigh, an chéad bhóthar a tógadh isteach sa réigiún fásach ollmhór seo riamh. Thosaigh sé láithreach ag tógáil baile margaidh don dúiche. D’ardaigh baile Bhéal an Mhuirthead go tapaigh. Dúirt a phleanálaí Patrick Knight, ‘a d’ardaíodh amhail le draíocht, baile san fhásach, ósais san fhásach’.

Ar an Satharn 4 Bealtaine déanfaidh an Compántas Amharclainne Tírdhreacha clúiteach LUXE an scéal stairiúil seo a athléiriú go healaíonta. Le rannpháirtíocht an phobail leanfaidh mórshiúl éadrom bealach an chéad charráiste sin ó thalamh go muir.

Dé Sathairn 4 Bealtaine, 9pm, Cearnóg Cartúir Béal an Mhuirthead.

Tacaíocht bródúil ó Fháilte Éireann agus ón Roinn Gnóthaí Eachtracha trí Home to Mayo, tionscnamh Mayo.ie.
