University College Cork (UCC) is a public higher education institution in Cork, Ireland and is home to Ireland’s leading engaged research institute, the Environmental Research Institute (ERI) which coordinates MaREI. MaREI is the SFI Research Centre for Energy, climate and Marine research and innovation. The Centre comprises over 220 researchers focusing on defined global challenges such as Energy Transition, Climate Action and the Blue Economy.

In the COAST project, UCC through MaREI will draw on a significant track record in building capacity for coastal zone management. Coastal and marine research, innovation and outreach have been core activities in the University for over 25 years. UCC's MaREI Centre brings together a multidisciplinary team of coastal and marine experts, in fields such as governance, engineering, geomatics, ecology and mapping. A major focus has been on working with stakeholders across scales and delivering policy relevant outcomes. This had led to statutory planning outcomes, produces high levels of engagement with industry, involves influencing plans for the development of the Blue Economy, Maritime Spatial Planning, and sustainable development, and collaboration with international organisations such as UNEP and Future Earth.
