Wetlands of Mayo

Mayo has a wide variety of wetlands, which support many species of plant and animal. Our wetland habitats include bogs turloughs, fens, marshes, rivers and associated floodplains, lakes, springs, wet woodlands and various coastal wetland habitats.

Mayo Heritage Office, with support from the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage, has carried out a number of wetland projects including:

  • Compilation of a database of Mayo’s wetland sites
  • Publication of Wetlands of Mayo booklet, to raise awareness of Mayo’s wetlands and their importance for biodiversity, health and well-being, economy, tourism, flood and climate change mitigation.
