Biodiversity is the word used to describe all living things on earth – plants, animals, humans and habitats and the links and relationships between them. Biodiversity is vital to life on earth, providing us with food, clothes, medicines, as well as contributing to our quality of life through recreation and tourism. 

Mayo has an extremely rich and varied natural heritage and biodiversity. These pages contain information on species and habitats of importance to biodiversity in Mayo, along with some of the actions that the Heritage Office is taking, in partnership with other groups locally and nationally, to protect biodiversity.
