Claggan Island

Claggan Island has the distinction of being Mayo’s newest island – having only being officially declared an island in 1991. The tiny island is situated on the north-eastern corner of Blacksod Bay, about 12km from Belmullet.

The island is linked to the mainland by a narrow, sandy causeway that divides Tramore Bay from Blacksod Bay and it is circled by beautiful sandy beaches in every direction you look. The island is approx. 150 acres and offers some amazing views of Achill & the Mullet Peninsula.

Belmullet Coast Guard Station was built on the island in the late 1700s and was in operation until the 1920s. Three families lived and worked there, monitoring the coastline for any activity. The building has now been restored and converted into accommodation. Due to the exposure to the wild Atlantic winds, Srah beach (on the causeway) is very popular with kitesurfers.
