Road Safety in Mayo

We at the Road Safety Office believe that it is no coincidence that the death toll on Mayo roads has fallen from 11 in 2017 to 5 in 2020. This is considerably lower than the national average, but unfortunately 5 road fatalities in our county is 5 too many. Our goal is to do everything possible to get that number to zero and we do so by focusing on education and awareness and investing in the improvement of road infrastructure.

Financial investment into road infrastructure goes a long way toward improving the level of safety for all our road users. In 2018 for example, Mayo County Council allocated €1,924,800 for improvement works in Ballintubber, making it a safer area for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists alike.

We are currently involved in delivering the N5 Westport to Turlough project, which will see 20.3km of dual carriageway constructed for a total cost of €241 million. This is the biggest single infrastructural investment ever undertaken in Mayo and will go a long way toward alleviating traffic concerns in our county town and making our road networks safer for all users.

We run regular campaigns in schools and elsewhere to improve education and awareness about road safety concerns. If you wish to keep up to date with such campaigns, or to receive updates of road conditions and ongoing road works around the county, please follow Mayo County Council’s social media accounts:
