Refugee Resettlement Programme

In response to the international humanitarian crisis, Mayo County Council has been working with the Department of Justice and Equality, South West Mayo Development Company and local agencies to oversee the resettlement of Syrian Refugees coming from camps in Lebanon and Greece under United Nations Resettlement and Relocation Programmes,.

The project provides support to refugees resettled in the County since November 2016. Families arrive in Ireland often with limited English and very few material possessions; many dealing with the fall-out from the conflict in their home countries. Some families have spent years in Refugee camps with limited access to basic medical and education services.

Mayo County Council established an Interagency Resettlement Committee to coordinate and oversee the resettlement process. The group is made up of senior representatives from various services including education, health, housing, Gardai, social protection, childcare, community and local development.

Mayo County Council secured funding from the Department of Justice and EU AMIF programmes and Resettlement Workers were appointed through South West Mayo Development Company to provide practical support to families and assist them to live independently.

The Resettlement Team works from the Mayo Intercultural Action Offices at the Mosaic Centre Castlebar.
