Select Exhibition Video Now Live

Date: 23-02-2021

A video showcasing Select, an exhibition of artwork from the Mayo County Council Collection is now available to view online. This exhibition was a collaboration between Mayo Arts Service Westport Townhall and Westival, Westport Music and Arts Festival.  Artworks from the Mayo County Council Collection were selected for this exhibition and hosted Westport Townhall during October and November 2020.

The Mayo County Council collection includes artwork in a wide range of media by artists from or living in Mayo, or those who have exhibited in the county. Westival invited two local professional artists and two local citizens to work together to select the artworks for this exhibition. The artists: Breda Burns and Hettie Lawlor curated the exhibition with the assistance of Mary Duffy; a staff member of West Mayo Municipal District and Maureen Halpin, a Westport native with a keen interest in art. Aoife O'Toole, A/Public Art Coordinator facilitated the committee's visit to view the collection in 2020 during Covid-19 restrictions. They discussed the curatorial process and considered how the artworks they selected would work together. The video features Maureen Halpin, Paul Halpin, Mary Duffy and Rosemary Doyle viewing the exhibition behind closed doors during the lockdown in 2020. The exhibition and video project are supported by Mayo Arts Service, Mayo County Council and Mayo Age Friendly.

Artists featured in Select included: Mike Bernard, Bernie Bohan, Veronica Bolay, Sean Cannon, David Creedon, Margaret Duffy, Anne Finegan Pamela Grey, Selma Makela, Hugh McCormack, Margaret Morrisson, Ger Reidy, Sheila O’Gorman, Anthony Pilbro, Bernie Prendergast, David Quinn, Amanda Mc Mahon, Gerard Muller, Dermot Seymour, Mary Smyth, Marke Walsh and Michael Wann.

Also featured in the video is a second exhibition is Sacred Heart Lockdown Choices hosted by the Custom House Studios in Westport during October and November of 2020. It features works from the permanent collection of the Ballinglen Museum of Art in Ballycastle, north Mayo. The works were selected by residents, patients and staff at the Sacred Heart Home in Castlebar under the guidance of artist Tom Meskell and the support of Dr. Luke O’Donnell.
