Poetry Day Ireland 2023

Tune into the Tommy Marren Show on MidWest Radio (96.1fm) just after 9am Thursday April 27th for Mayo County Council Arts Service’s celebration of Poetry Day Ireland 2023 with poets Jean Tuomey and Fiacre Ryan who will read some of their poetry on the show.  The theme of Poetry Day Ireland 2023 is Message in a Bottle. Jean Tuomey, lives in Castlebar. She is published in several journals, national and international.  Her chapbook, Swept Back, was commended in Fools for Poetry 2018 and received special commendation in Blue Nib Chapbook 37, 2019. Her chapbook Magical Thinking was highly commended in Fool for Poetry 2021. She came 2nd in Fish poetry competition 2011, 1st in the Jonathan Swift Creative Awards for poetry in 2021 and the St Francis Hospice poetry competition 2022. Her debut collection, Swept Back (Lapwing), was launched in Dec. 2022.

Fiacre Ryan, is a 22 year old nonverbal autistic writer and poet from Castlebar Co. Mayo. He has been writing poetry since his teens, and in 2022 published "Speechless, Reflections from my Voiceless World" (Merrion Press), which was nominated as best newcomer at the Irish Book Awards.  He writes eloquently and honestly about his own life experiences, " The truth is piercing in Fiacre Ryan's debut collection of poems and prose, the narrative has all the darkness and light of a fairytale" (The Irish Times).
