Mayo County Council Updated Green Flag Announcement
Mayo County Council has welcomed the news that Cross Beach has retained its Green Coast award for 2022, bringing the total Green Coast awards for Mayo up to 6 for the coming season.
The awards are given to beaches which have excellent water quality but may be less developed and less populated than Blue Flag beaches. The Mayo beaches included in the Green Coast Awards are Tranaun Beach on Inishturk Island, Termon Beach, Srah Beach, Portacloy Beach, Rinroe Beach and Cross.
The Green Coast Award is a symbol of environmental excellence and has been established to acknowledge, promote and protect the environment of our beaches. The award is for beaches which have excellent water quality, but which are also prized for their natural, unspoilt environment. These sites must be managed in partnership with the local community to be considered for the Green Coast Award.
Jim Horan, Administrative Officer in Environment, Climate Change & Agriculture, at Mayo County Council welcomed the news that Cross Beach had retained its Green Coast award for 2022. “We are delighted that Cross Beach, after appeal, has retained its Green Coast award for 2022. It’s a fabulous beach with excellent water quality in an unspoilt local environment. The management of this, and all beaches, is a partnership between Mayo County Council and the local community and retaining this award is recognition of this”
