Bealtaine 2021

May is here and that means it is time for Bealtaine, which celebrates the Arts and Creativity as we age.  Mayo County Council Arts Service has some lovely events planned, and all the events are free. There is a mixture of onsite, online and over the phone events.  Here are some of this year’s highlights. 

Mayo County Council Arts Service is running online Armchair Azure tours at 11am on the 4th and 17th of May and the 7th of June.  These tours cater for persons living with dementia and their carers and families.  Please contact the Arts Service directly to book. 

We have an online “In Conversation” series which sees Artists Alice Maher and Breda Burns in conversation on May 5th at 12pm via Zoom.  Filmmakers Anthony Foutz and Lorcan Hynes will be in conversation on May 26th at 12pm via Zoom.  Please contact the Arts Service directly to book. 

We also have an intergenerational mentoring project taking place between artists Deirdre Walsh and Alice Dixon. 

Perspectives on Home is an online Zoom talk by artist Michael Fortune based on a photography and storytelling project he facilitated with Mayo people. This talk is a must for anyone with an interest in local folklore and takes place May 21st at 1pm.  Please contact the Arts Service directly to book. 

There will be an online music performance by musicians John Hoban (fiddle, mando-cello, song and more) and Laoise Kelly (Harp) on May 27th and 29th which can be viewed from the Linenhall Arts Centre website between 2pm and 7pm on the specified dates www.thelinenhall.com

There will be a screening of a documentary, Dawn to Dusk which follows eight older female artists that came on residency to Ballinglen Arts Foundation in 2020.  The screening takes place on 28th of May at 12pm on Mayo Arts Office Facebook page.

The Poetry Line is an opportunity to have a 30-minute phone conversation with poet Terry Mc Donagh and discuss some of his poetry.  Slots can be booked for the mornings of May 26th,27th and 28th.  Please contact the Arts Service directly to book. 

Why not try your hand at a Rainbow Textile Project. This video by Mayo artist Katie Moore brings you step by step through the process of making a rainbow using wool and other materials. The video is available to view from https://vimeo.com/429204202 

The Memories Project sees artist Elaine Mears gather memories and stories from people that pertain to an object that is sentimental to them.  If you would like to become involved in this project, please contact Mayo County Council Arts Service directly.
