Project Description

The N59 Kilbride scheme, between Newport and Westport, is 2.85km in length and commences just outside Newport and extends towards Wesport in a southerly direction.  The section is part of the overall N59 Westport to Mulranny Road Improvement Scheme.

The existing road and junctions were extremely deficient in cross section, alignment and visibility. The Great Western Greenway, a 42km off-road walking and cycling trail, runs close to and parallel to the N59 in this area.

The project comprised of the following improvements: -

2.85km of Type 3 Single Carriageway road

1.95km of 2.5m wide cycleway, Incorporation of the Great Western Greenway into the carriageway cross section and some offline re-alignment of the greenway itself

Construction of a river culvert.

Re-alignment of 8 side road junctions
