Resurgam with the English Cornett & Sackbut Ensemble and St Muredach's Cathedral Choir

May 31 @ 08:00 pm - May 31 @ 09:30 pm

Critically acclaimed, Resurgam, Ireland’s premier project based choral ensemble has been thrilling audiences for over 18 years with historically informed repertoire brought back to life with freshness and passion under the directorship of Mark Duley. In this exciting programme entitled Siege to Siege, Resurgam and the English Cornett & Sackbut Ensemble will partner with St Muredach’s Cathedral choir in Ballina, and Collegium choir in Galway the following evening, making this striking concert very much a community endeavour. The music reflects a period in history when the strategic missions of large empires were a driving force in the major political changes of their time. The Habsburg Empire, which dominated a large portion of Central Europe from the early 16th century to the turn of the 19th century, saw numerous bellicose conflicts during its various epochs and under its numerous monarchs—it also bore witness to some of the biggest revolutions in history, culture, and music. “Resurgam demonstrate the power and confidence of their ensemble, with bold lower voices and an attractive treble sheen from the sopranos." (Gramophone) Our programme follows the milestone battles of the 16th through 17th centuries, tracing the major lines of conflict and contact between the Holy Roman Empire and the Ottoman Empire, and presenting these points of meeting as musical and cultural confluences, and made this an era of thriving European musical activity”. “…the voices of Resurgam under Duley’s unerringly paced direction make an imposing yet wonderfully sensitive sound, the long lines exquisitely shaped..." (Europadisc) This is a rare opportunity to hear such high calibre music making in the west of Ireland, and definitely, not to be missed. Galway concert on Saturday June 1st as part of the Galway Early Music Festival www.galwayearlymusic.com
