Mayo offers a number of iconic discovery points along the Wild Atlantic Way, some of which include:

Downpatrick Head, between Ballycastle village and Céide Fields rises 40 metres above the sea with fantastic views of the Staggs of Broadhaven and Dún Briste, a sea stack that soars 45 metres into the sky just off the coastline. Dún Briste was cut off by a storm in 1393 and its inhabitants had to be winched to safety on ropes.

Also to be seen are the ruins of a church founded by St Patrick and a Second World War look-out shelter beside a spectacular cavernous blow-hole. This is now home to a new subtly spectacular land-art installation.

Keem Bay on Achill Island, a sickle-shaped strand scooped out of the mountains which fronts onto a bay that was once teeming with basking shark.

Roonagh Pier just beyond Louisburg is the gateway to some of Mayo’s offshore island communities on Inishturk and Clare Island.

Inishturk Island - The home fires are always burning on the island outpost of Inishturk and now a sculpture titled, ‘The Tale of the Tongs’, commemorating the past and present culture and community of the island, part of The Gathering Ireland 2013, the ‘Spirit of Place’ evokes the centuries of cultural gatherings on this spectacular island, which is renowned for its warm welcome and great sessions of music.

The eight-foot high sculpture — visible from many vantage points en route to the island — encapsulates the sense of welcome from the home-fires set in this unspoiled landscape. The island’s six family names are highlighted on the sculpture — Heanue, Heaney, O’Toole, Concannon, Faherty and Prendergast.
