Date: 21-12-2020

Mayo County Council proudly presents the #ToBeIrish @ Christmas campaign, a diverse and entertaining schedule of activity that reaches out to those who may not be able to travel home this year for Christmas and as a result could be feeling isolated during this period. Please share with family and friends

It has been a very challenging year for Ireland, and Mayo people everywhere and we are keen to end the year on a positive note by celebrating and showcasing Mayo’s connections all around the world during this special time.

Running from 21 – 31 December on our Mayodotie Facebook Page, full details about the campaign is available on www.mayo.ie/tobeirish

Featuring on Mayo.ie social media channels throughout the campaign you can look forward to the wonderful sights and sounds from home with ‘Christmas in Mayo’. All festive photos and footage entered in the #TobeIrish@Christmas campaign will feature in a movie collage set to background music of Christmas images from around Mayo.

The acclaimed Mayo Day film ‘Oceans Apart’, which was released in May this year will also feature on the page – its message meaning even more now, than ever – ‘though we may be oceans apart, we will see you again’.

Christmas Carols in Ballintubber Abbey - performed by Lisa Canny and Special Guests in the historical and stunning surrounds of the Abbey. This concert will be available to view at www.mayo.ie/tobeirish for the duration of the campaign and will also be streamed on the Mayo.ie Facebook for all to enjoy.

Another magical musical moment will be with Cathal Gavin performing in the iconic location of Ashford Castle.  Cathal’s angelic voice is guaranteed to bring festive Spirit and Joy to your home this Christmas!

Christmas in Mayo wouldn’t be complete without a unique moment from Knock Shrine. This year a Special Christmas Blessing for our diaspora, families and friends both at home and away will take place in Knock Shrine with Parish Priest Fr Richard Gibbons. The mass will also feature a beautiful Christmas Carol medley from The Schola Choir in Knock. It will be a truly festive moment and one not to be missed. This special event will be available online for the duration of the campaign at  www.mayo.ie/tobeirish

Mayo County Council encourages people and businesses to shop local this Christmas, by purchasing items and services in Co Mayo, you are supporting local businesses and bolstering employment in the county.    As part of our on-going and continuous support of local enterprise in the county, we have compiled a directory of more than 170 Mayo businesses available at www.mayo.ie/look-for-local. These businesses have an e-commerce offering or a phone-to-order service, making it a simple process for any individual or business to support local. Just pick up the phone and call their number to place your order, or go online and purchase from their website, don’t forget many businesses offer either home delivery or collection.

We would like to remind our friends and family who live away from home that you don’t have to be local to shop local. Websites and social media pages offer a 24 hour online opportunity for anyone, anywhere to make enquiries or order services and goods to be delivered to those they love at home, and many businesses also offer international delivery. Your effort to shop local will make a huge difference to your home town or village

To close out on #ToBeIrish @ Christmas tune in on New Years Eve on mayo.ie facebook for a two-hour live show,  ‘Mayo Connects Globally on New Year's Eve in association with Mayo.ie’
