Ballina Arts Centre News – Week Commencing 24 June 2019:

Laura Jean Zito – By Hand.

On Friday 5th July @ 8pm, Ballina Arts Centre will host the official opening of ‘By Hand’ by Laura Jean Zito.

Having been once encouraged by the great John B Keane to “photograph the farmers, they’re a dyin’ breed”, Laura Jean Zito did just that and that became the inception of this particular series.

These nostalgic images show the seeds within of present day ‘turmoils’: plastics in the environment, gun control, fascism, injustice, fraud, harassment, homelessness, migration, energy, religion, Brexit, generation gap, education, resources, water.
Hi-Tech filters are replacing the personal touch, affecting our relationships to everything. We’ve gained velocity, but lost veracity. Out with the ‘Town Crier’, and in with ‘Fake News. ’Art is done by mind and by hand. Robots spit out products that rival each other for ‘perfection’, but the value of hand-made objects is in their ‘imperfection’, just like humans.
Exhibition Runs until 31st August. Admission is FREE and ALL are Welcome.

Take Me Home, Colleen (as part of Ballina Street  Festival).

On Monday 8th July @ 7.30pm, Ballina Arts Centre will host a story of love and loss, hope and resilience! Take Me Home, Colleen is a collection of 12 original songs and stories, backed up by a cinematic visual experience, which tells the story of two young lovers and their struggles to survive the so-called Irish ‘Potato Famine’.

It is 1845 and the people of Killala in North Mayo are faced with the mot desperate of realities. Sean Óg Gaughan will have to fight to save his family, while Colleen will have to fight to save her dreams.

Written, directed and performed by Brendan Farrell, founding member of the well-known folk and ballad group The Sam Maguires, Take Me Home, Colleen is a contemporary folk music masterclass.
