Past and present members of Westport Order of Malta gathered at the Wyatt Hotel recently to celebrate recently being crowned the Order of Malta’s number one unit in the country.
The organisation, which boasts over 10,000 members in more than 80 units nationwide, are widely known for their voluntary ambulance and emergency services. However, their involvement delves much deeper into local communities, with the Westport unit described as “a model unit” whose example should be led by others.
Founded in 1943, Westport is one of the oldest units in the country and its membership base has boomed in the last five years thanks to the outstanding work of former officer in charge Éamonn Berry and the seamless transition by Bernie Greene into the role. The unit was highly praised for their recent efforts in community care initiatives, working closely with Western Care and the local social services centre.
