Public Information announcement from Mayo County Council

Due to the Status Yellow and Orange Weather Warnings issued by Met Eireann for Saturday and Sunday, February 8 & 9, Mayo County Council have a number of measures in place

As a result of the warnings, The Flood Action Plan has been activated for Crossmolina due to potential heavy rainfall and high water levels in the River Deel.

The R313 Belmullet to Blacksod will be closed from 3am – 9am on Saturday Morning, February 8th and from 3am-10am on Sunday Morning, February 9th. Local Diversions in place due to anticipated tidal flooding.

A number of further road closures are possible in the West Mayo area due to the expected arrival of Storm Ciara on Saturday night, allied with high tide and storm surge on the Mayo coast expected at 6am on Sunday morning.

  • the L5840 Old Coast Road from Westport Quay and the local road at Carrowholly, Westport, known as The Barrier, could be closed to traffic for a time.

As a result of the alert in place for wind and coastal flooding for Mayo a number of local roads in coastal parts could also be closed at various times over the course of the weekend.

Mayo County Councils Severe Weather Assessment Team will  monitor the situation over the days ahead.

Further information, including times of any road closures, will be posted on Mayo County Council’s website and Social Media channels.

In the event of a change to Met Eireann’s forecast these plans will be reviewed.

Status Orange – Wind warning for Donegal and Mayo

In advance of the arrival of Storm Ciara on Sunday, south to southwest winds on Saturday will reach mean speeds of 65-80km/h with gusts of up to 120 km/h.

Status Yellow – Wind warning for Ireland

Saturday, 8th Feb: Southerly winds will strengthen during Saturday reaching mean speeds of 50-65km/h with gusts reaching 90-110km/h.

Sunday, 9th Feb: Storm Ciara (named by the UK Met Office) will produce very strong winds over Ireland on Sunday with a risk of damaging gusts.

Over the weekend the combination of Spring Tides and high seas as well as stormy conditions will result in an elevated risk of coastal flooding especially along southern, western and northwestern coasts.

Status Yellow – Rainfall warning for Ireland

Saturday, 8th Feb: A spell of heavy rain will spread eastwards across the country on Saturday with 20-40mm expected, highest in the west and northwest.

Sunday, 9th Feb: Another spell of heavy rain on Sunday will clear to squally wintry showers. Another 20-40mm likely.

A risk of localised flooding this weekend, especially over the western half of the country.
