What you need to know about President Biden’s visit to Mayo

US President Joe Biden will be arriving in Mayo on Friday, April 14th for his eagerly awaited visit to his ancestral home.

President Biden will be arriving in Mayo at Ireland West Airport on the afternoon of Friday, April 14th. Normal operations will continue at the airport at all times; however, members of the public should allow additional time to arrive at the airport due to possible temporary road closures.

President Biden will have several engagements during the day including a private visit to Knock Shrine and his visit will culminate with a public address outside of St Muredach’s Cathedral in Ballina on the banks of the River Moy. The public address will be preceded by a number of musical acts to provide entertainment for the crowds before President Biden’s remarks.

The entertainment will be provided by Irish rock bands The Coronas and The Academic and legendary Irish folk band The Chieftains. The gates will open to the public at 5.30pm with the musical acts getting underway at 7pm.  

Guests should enter the event at the junction of Barrett and Tolan Streets or the junction of Dillon Terrace and Lower Pearse Street. All guests should be prepared for security screening like airport screening. Large bags and umbrellas will not be permitted.

A limited free shuttle bus service will be provided to and from the event and available on a first come, first served basis.

Shuttles will begin departing park-and-shuttle locations at 4.30pm. The last shuttle to the event will depart at 7pm. Return shuttles can be picked up at the pre-event drop-off location and will begin when the evening’s programme concludes.

The locations are:

Zone 1 – Knockmore GAA car park, drop-off and return at junction of James Street and Hill Street;

Zone 2 – Castleconnor Community Centre car park, drop-off and return at Bunree Industrial Estate;

Zone 3 – Crossmolina town, drop-off and return at Mercy Road;

Zone 4 – North Ballina, McVann Furniture on the Killala Road, drop-off and return at Bohernasup.

Road closures and traffic restrictions

A number of road closures and traffic restrictions will be in place during the day and in the lead up to President Biden’s arrival in Mayo.
