Phase Two of Westport CCTV to be Rolled Out

THE roll-out of phase two of the Westport CCTV system is due to be completed in the next 12 months with cameras expected to cover the Octogan and Newport Road area.
The launch of phase two of the Westport CCTV system took place last week in Westport Garda Station with members of Mayo County Council, Westport Chamber of Commerce, Destination Westport and other stakeholders attending the launch.
Phase one of the CCTV system was launched last year with the installation of seven cameras around the town and even more cameras are expected to be installed under phase two. The exact location of the cameras has not been determined but they are expected to cover areas around the Octogan and around Newport Road.
Independent councillor Christy Hyland welcomed the roll-out of phase two of the system which he said he made a priority when he was first elected to the old Westport Town Council. Phase one of the system, he said had already proved a success and was there to make the town a safe place for locals and visitors.
“The gardaí in conjunction with the council will decide the best location for the cameras to benefit the town. It is not as if the town if being overrun by crime, it is not. We are being proactive, not reactive to ensure Westport remains a safe place to live and to visit,” he said.
After a number of years in trying to secure funding and the best system to purchase, the CCTV system was finally installed and went live last year. The current cameras are located at O’Donnell’s Shoe Shop to cover the Castlebar Street and Mall area, at the top of Bridge Street and around Mill Street. The cameras are fed into a link in the local garda station and operate on a 24/7 basis.
“The cameras have proved a huge success already and have already proved to be beneficial to the local gardaí and the local people. I have to compliment all the people involved in the operation of the system. The introduction of a CCTV system is a commitment I gave when I was first elected to the Town Council and I am glad to see it come to fruition.”
