Crafty Little Christmas Weekend

Get in the festive spirit with a special Crafty Little Christmas Weekend at the Museum on Saturday and Sunday, December 14 and 15. Here are six great activities to enjoy over the weekend.

Christmas traditions from yesteryear

See how generations past celebrated Christmas in Ireland in the Life in the Community permanent exhibition on Level C of the main galleries. The Nollaig display includes traditional Christmas festivities, early Christmas cards, Wren Boys, Mummers and more.

Christmas crafts

Enjoy a family crafting activity with artist Cas McCarthy. Drop-in to make your own Christmas decorations and crafts between 11.30am and 1pm or 2pm to 3.30pm on Saturday, December 14, and from 1pm to 4pm on Sunday, December 15. Suitable for all ages. Admission free. No booking required.

Find the fairies

Can you find the Christmas fairies in the woods? Locate 10 fairies and find out their names to complete the challenge. Collect your map at Museum Reception and a prize when you finish the trail (while stocks last). Available during Museum opening hours. Admission free. No booking required.

Decoration hunt

We have lost our decorations in the exhibition galleries. Solve the festive clues to seek them out! Pick up an activity sheet, clipboard and pencil at Museum Reception to enjoy this Christmas trail. Available during Museum opening hours. Admission free. No booking required.

Choral performances

Enjoy atmospheric choral performances by two of the region’s leading choirs in the unique setting of the exhibition galleries. The Cill Aodain Choral Society will perform at 3.30pm on Saturday and the Mayo Male Voice Choir will perform at 3pm on Sunday. Admission free. No booking required.

The Snowman and the Snowdog

Pop in to the Museum’s AV Theatre to see the animated film, The Snowman and the Snowdog, with screenings throughout the weekend. This animated short is the sequel to the Christmas classic The Snowman. The award-winning film follows Billy, a young boy now living in the house where the original story of The Snowman unfolded.

Museum opening hours

Admission to the National Museum of Ireland – Country Life, Turlough Park House & Gardens is free. The exhibition galleries are open Tuesday to Saturday, from 10am to 5pm, and Sunday to Monday from 1 to 5pm.
