Moonlight Walk for Mayo Mountain Rescue fundraiser

‘MOONLIGHT in Mayo’ may be a much-loved folk song but for the Mayo Mountain Rescue Team (MMRT) it is an important fundraiser, which will be held on Saturday, March 23 next. Now in its third year, the innovative event aims to raise essential funds ‘to meet the ongoing operating costs, first aid equipment and training needs of one of the busiest Mountain Rescue Ireland (MRI) teams’ in the country. This year’s atmospheric walk will be held for the second time on the Letterkeen Loop.
Speaking to The Mayo News, Richard Harnedy, MMRT’s Fundraising Officer said: “We chose Letterkeen because of its beautiful landscape and last year we got great support from people in
the Newport area.”
Meanwhile, MMRT has confirmed that it responded to a total of 38 callouts between March 24 and October 23, 2018. “Reek Sunday is treated as one callout of the 38 with 17 incidents recorded on that one day when the Mayo team was assisted by mountain rescue teams from across Ireland and the UK. A total of 32 (92 percent) of these occurred on Croagh Patrick, while two occurred on Mweelrea and one on Nephin,” a spokesman said.
He explained how essential fundraising was for the team ‘to be able to provide this free voluntary emergency service’. “As one of the busiest teams in Ireland, the Mayo Mountain Rescue Team,
has to ensure that it meets its operating costs and the first response First Aid kits are kept replenished throughout the year to meet the large number of callouts… In effect, the team are
providing pre-hospital first aid care to a casualty before handing them over to a HSE ambulance or Coast Guard helicopter for onward transport to a hospital for medical treatment,” the
