Mayo County Council are delighted to welcome the news that two Mayo towns collected awards at the Bank of Ireland National Enterprise Town Awards in Kilkenny last night.
Castlebar was the big winner locally, collecting the rising star award, for towns or urban areas that have significantly improved as a place to live, visit and invest. This prestigious prize also comes with €20,000 in prize money to be invested in community projects.
The judging process covered a wide range of areas including local enterprise initiatives, attractiveness of the town, enterprise partnerships, town leadership, overall community support as well as efforts to foster better inclusion and diversity.
The judges were impressed with Castlebar based on an initial visit in September where they were shown around the town before a presentation was made. The judges returned a second time to consider the town for the Rising Star award based on what they saw.
In what was a strong category Castlebar overcame the challenge of areas such as the Dublin Docklands to win the award. The recent investment in the town by the likes of Carraig Donn and Meissner was a huge boost.
Belmullet was the other big winner on the night. The North Mayo community were winners of the Enterprise Town Awards in Connaught/Ulster region for towns with a population of less than 2,000.
Ballina were also nominated for an award at the event in Lyrath Estate last night.
The annual awards, which are now in their fourth year, bring business, community groups and local authorities together, in each town, to showcase the spirit of enterprise in their local area. There are over 40 awards available from a total prize fund of €193,000.
After being nominated by the Local Enterprise Office, Ballina, Castlebar and Belmullet were visited by the judges on September 25 & 26.
Chief Executive of Mayo County Council, Peter Hynes, welcomed the news; “Strong local economies are the backbone of the County and as a Local Authority we are proud to support businesses and community groups working together to create jobs, drive growth and build thriving communities in Co. Mayo. Collaboration and Teamwork are key. I want to congratulate Castlebar and Belmullet on their award wins last night and Ballina on its nomination. I hope they enjoy their success and, along with every community in Mayo, continue to build on it into the future.”
John Magee, Acting Director of Economic Development and Community Engagement with Mayo County Council, believes the awards are important for future investment; “It is important that the towns and communities in Mayo are able to put their best foot forward and, through working with the Local Authority, create a positive narrative around the town. Castlebar, Belmullet and Ballina all achieved that last night.
“Being nominated for and winning National Enterprise Town Awards creates that positive narrative and can help these towns, and others, become a magnet for people and companies who want to do something. The potential for further investment is also boosted through association with the awards. The communities of Belmullet, Castlebar and Ballina should be very proud of how well they have done and what this could mean for the towns.”
Cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council, Cllr Brendan Mulroy, said it’s a great boost for the county; “It’s fantastic to see two Mayo communities collecting awards in Kilkenny last night. It is a great boost for the towns of Castlebar and Belmullet and also for all those who put in so many hours of hard work. Congratulations must also go to Ballina for being nominated. It is a great vote of confidence in the three towns and in County Mayo.”
