Mayo.ie event to turn Manchester Green and Red for 2015 Irish Festival

The 2015 Manchester Irish Festival which is Europe’s biggest Irish Festival outside of the Emerald Isle will be turned Green and Red on Friday 6 March at 8pm for the free launch of a special promotional event sponsored by Mayo County Council and its Diaspora website www.mayo.ie and supported by The Western People. The annual Irish Festival runs from Friday 6 March to Friday 20 March and features over 200 events which include headlining gigs from the likes of The Script, Noel Gallagher, Nathan Carter and Young, Gifted & Green.
The Mayo Day promotional weekend which runs from Friday 6 March to Sunday 8 March, takes place at the newly opened Fred’s Ale House, Art Gallery and Coffee Bar in Levenshulme village which is home to one of the biggest Mayo communities outside of the West of Ireland. The aim of the event is to highlight Ireland’s first global ‘Mayo Day’ which is due to take place on Saturday 2 May and aims to reunite the estimated 9.1m people around the world who have roots in the County in the West of Ireland.

Lawrence Hennigan from Mayo Manchester one of the organizers of the weekend said “Everyone in Manchester is getting really excited about our plans for celebrating Mayo Day this year in South Manchester. The weekend will just a taster for our massive Mayo Day Gala Concert at St Mary’s Parish Hall in Levenshulme and the Family fun day we are staging at the Chorlton Irish Club. I would like to thank all the companies in Mayo who have donated such fantastic prizes and the tremendous support we have received from The Western People and the Mayo County Council.”
The launch night will feature a performance by the Mayo award winning Fianna Phadraig (St Patrick) Pipe Band, plus a concert by the 5 piece Celtic Folk Band Summercros. Visitors to the launch will be given a free opportunity to win a €1,000 holiday in Mayo at the luxurious Clare Island Lighthouse Boutique Hotel, which will be drawn at 9.30pm. An opportunity to visit a special exhibition about The Titanic and Mayo’s connection to it will also be launched on the evening together with a photographic exhibition about Mayo Day and the UK launch of Mayo craft beers ‘Jack the Lad’ and ‘Irish Blond’ from the Reel Deel Brewery in Crossmolina. The award winning Market Kitchen restaurant in Ballina, County Mayo is also involved in the weekend and a meal for two at the will be raffled off on Sunday 8 March.
Saturday 7 March features a special book reading and signing at 7pm by author Annette Sills who is promoting her booking called ‘The Relative Harmony of Julie O’Hagan’, which is set in Manchester and Mayo. Then at 8pm, BBC Radio Manchester presenter and musician – Mike Sweeney will be staging an exclusive festival gig with Irish musician Paddy O’Hare. Finally on Sunday 8 March, Joe Keegan from the hit BBC series The Voice will be staging a special intimate Irish Music, Song and Dance show to raise funds for his forthcoming trip to Montreal to compete in the 2015 World Irish Dancing championships. The talented Irish musician, singer and dancer shot to fame after he taught Will I Am to Irish Dance live on the BBC. Joe appeared in the sell-out Mayo Manchester weekend in the summer and is appearing at Young, Gifted & Green’s Gala Concert at the Lowry on Thursday 19 March. This early evening concert which starts at 5pm will be a great chance to catch the performer in a very intimate setting.
