Castlebar native Vice Admiral Mark Mellett has formally assumed the role of chief of staff of the Defense Forces.
He succeeds Lieutenant General Conor O’Boyle and is the first Irish Naval Service Officer to be appointed to the position of Chief of Staff.
A past pupil of St Gerald’s College in Castlebar, he joined the Navy in 1976 and commanded the LE Orla, LE Ciara and LE Eithne as well as holding a range of appointments in Naval headquarters.
He was appointed Deputy Chief of Staff in November 2013, and has now taken up the top position.
Vice Admiral Mellett said it was humbling to take up the role in what he called a ” landmark time for Ireland and the Irish people”.
