MAYO cyclist Maeve Gallagher set the pace for Team Ireland at Rás na mBan – Ireland’s premier women’s stage race.
From day two of the five-day event the 17-year-old Leaving Cert student held the position of leading Irish rider, placing sixth overall in a very strong international field of 21 teams.
Second best Irish rider after the first day, on day two Maeve – a member of Castlebar Cycling Club – finished in fourth place and moved into the lead of the Kilkenny Best Irish Rider section, a position she retained to the end.
The third stage from Kilkenny was the longest of the week, taking the riders to a summit finish on The Cut in the Slieve Bloom Mountains in Co. Laois. A group of 30 riders assembled ahead of the final 7.5km ascent, and as a five drew clear as the gradient gripped, Maeve held off her chasers for fifth place.
On Saturday she was again best of the Irish, in seventh, and the Swinford native was in the main peloton on the final day of racing in Kilkenny on Sunday, finishing best of the Irish in sixth place overall.
