Killeen NS leading the way

Posted in Connect on January 30, 2019.

KILLEEN NS are currently in year one of their Erasmus+ project. Erasmus+ aims to modernise and improve the quality of teaching and training across Europe. SALT is the title of this particular project which stands for ‘Sharing and Learning Together’. Killeen NS were very fortunate to be twinned with Colegio Corazón de María in Spain and St Theresa’s College in Malta. On November 12, teaching principal, Bríd Grady and acting deputy principal, Laura Kilcoyne, travelled to the beautiful city of Gijón in northern Spain to kick start the international project.  On the morning of November 13, the educators met for the first time.

Communication up until this point had been through Skype and email. This meeting gave the educators a chance to get to know each other and learn about the variety of different schools involved in the Erasmus+  programme. Deadlines were set and exciting plans were put in place with a variety of different learning activities to take place in each classroom throughout the year 2019. This first mobility of the two-year project ran for four days. The Spanish hosts gave all four educators an experience to remember and fabulous new methodologies to bring back to classrooms in Ireland and Malta.

Teachers in Colegio Corazón de María, which included pre-school, primary and post-primary levels, showed off their best practices to their international counterparts. They specialised in new IT methodologies and were more than willing to share their expertise. Teachers in all countries are looking forward to growing professionally as they adapt these new teaching styles in their classrooms. Pupils will reap the rewards in all schools as they share their commoninterests and work in international groups with children in Spain and Malta. Principal, Bríd Grady would like to urge other schools to avail of this wonderful form of professional development funded by Léargas here in Ireland. Erasmus+ funding is available to all sectors of formal, informal and non-formal education.
