The Children of Lir @ Holy Trinity Church, Westport

April 25 @ 7:00 pm

On Saturday 25th April 2020 Mayo man, Patrick Cassidy’s Cantata, The Children of Lir, will be performed in Holy Trinity Church, Westport at 7pm.  This is a musical interpretation of the legend of the Children of Lir, so firmly associated with Mayo.

Patrick lives in Los Angeles, where he is a renowned composer of film music. His recent film scores include Calvary, Hannibal and Veronica Guerin.  His compositions for the 1916-2016 commemoration ceremonies commissioned by the Irish Government played a major role in the celebrations. He was recently knighted by the Italian Government for his new opera Dante, celebrating the life of the great Italian philosopher and poet.  His new Latin Mass was recorded and released late last year.

We are delighted that Patrick Cassidy and his family will attend this performance of his work in Westport.

The Children of Lir will be performed by Blessington Millennium Choir under the direction of Yvonne O’Conor, with Westport Children’s Choir under the direction of Eriko Hopkinson.  Soloists include Ursula Conlan, Barbara Broderick, David Trillo , David Parkinson and Victor Coe.  The renowned tenor, David Trillo, is travelling from Madrid specially to join us for the occasion!  And, we are privileged to have local tenor, Cathal Gavin, making a guest appearance with us too! Accompaniment will be on organ by Charles Pearson; Harps by Harry Carpendale and Mary Nolan; Timpani by Ed Hopkinson; and Uilleann Pipes by local piper Diarmuid Moynihan.

The programme will also include Irish Melodies ranging from Mo Ghile Mear to The Kerry Dance, from Eileen Aroon to Danny Boy and an extract from Patrick’s new Mass!  The Concert is a Charity  Event in aid of The Irish Cancer Society and Holy Trinity Church Restoration Fund.  It is generously sponsored by Portwest, Westport House and Hotel Westport.

Blessington Millennium Choir, as its name suggests, was founded in 1999 to celebrate the new Millennium.  It is an ecumenical choir, a social choir, and exists for the pleasure of singing as a community and as a fundraiser for local and national charities. To date we have raised in excess of 50,000 Euro.  We have performed in Germany, France, UK and all over Ireland, from Cork to Clifden; from Killaloe to Kildare!

Our friendship with Patrick Cassidy, and his generous support of our efforts makes this trip to Westport very special for us, and we hope for a full house at the concert.

Tickets: €15 from Westport Town Hall Theatre 098 28459
