Mayo Day presents a weekend of family fun with our Flagship event being held this year in Castlebar.
As we bring history to life, experience “Life in Another Time in a Military Camp”. A great way to find out about what the soldiers and rebels of 1798 were really like and did.
Find out what daily life was like for a soldier in 1798. Come and meet with authentically uniformed French and British re-enactors and Irish Rebel Pikemen and Women in a typical 1798 military camp, complete with tents, muskets, swords, sabres, cannons, marching, combat drills, and much more.
Stroll through historic Castlebar and experience the sights and sounds of a traditional market harking back to 1798, including traditional food stalls, skilled craft demonstrations, costumed entertainers, walkabout performers and live entertainment.
On Sunday, experience the spectacular 1798 battle re-enactment of “The Races of Castlebar” – when a combined force of 2,000 French troops and Irish rebels routed a force of 6,000 British militia – along with several other fantastic Living History Events when the renowned In Humbert’s Footsteps comes to town.
Complete with authentically uniformed and armed re-enactors from France, Ireland, England and Northern Ireland, the main battle spectacle will take place on the May Bank Holiday weekend 2017.
