CASTLEBAR SET FOR MUSIC EXTRAVAGANZA THIS CHRISTMAS AT CHRISTCHURCH!
One of the biggest concerts this festive season in Mayo has just been announced. Greenroom Bookings are delighted to bring a spectacular line up of singer-songwriters and bands from all across Ireland to Christchurch, Castlebar on Friday 28th December.
Galway singer-songwriter Ultan Conlon and The Night Owls will top the bill on the night. Ultan and his band have a special ability at capturing the human spirit through his lyrics, which have been honed over almost two decades of writing and performing.
Returning to Castlebar after a groundbreaking 2018, where Ultan Conlon has toured Ireland and the UK with Eddi Reader and The Stunning, sold out a headline show at Whelan’s in Dublin, played his most high-profile shows to date at the Trinity College Summer Series as special guest of Bryan Ferry, and in Dublin’s 3arena with former Creedance Clearwater Revival singer John Fogerty and the Steve Miller band. His release of the single “A Weak Heart Like Mine” (featuring the legendary Mary Coughlan) has gained him national media performances on RTÉ’s Late Late Show and many others.
Also on the line up for this spectacular night of music are Mayo’s very own Coda. Seven men living in County Mayo, connected by music. A few years ago, Coda started arranging and performing songs from widely different sources. Their diverse vocal and instrumental backgrounds, including folk, trad, blues, rock and pop music, combined with their experience of multi-part vocal harmony, helped them develop their arrangements intuitively. The mix of genres and vocal styles is the result. Some songs are acapella, some accompanied, some traditional, some contemporary. Seeing these men live, is just an absolute treat.
Also hailing from Mayo, Vickers Vimy craft songs that dwell on the borders of folk and Americana. Rich eclectic sounds anchor lyrical themes of scratched vinyl nights and hazy Sunday mornings. Their second album “Atlas of Hearts” was released in 2018, which the lead single “Chicago” is gaining notable attraction.
A very special guest to conclude this line up is Emma Langford. Winner of the prestigious RTÉ Radio 1 Folk Awards’ ‘Best Emerging Artist’ and nominated for the Irish Post Music Awards’ ‘Best Folk Act’, Emma Langford has wasted no time this year in establishing herself on the Irish and international folk scene. Emma Langford’s distinctive voice is described by song-writing legend Phil Coulter as “a breath of fresh air”. She deftly blends traditional Irish lilt with folk and jazz nuances, while delicate guitar work complements a clear intuitive sense of melody. Hailing from Limerick City in the South-West of Ireland, her fusion of home-grown brazen wit and piercingly insightful lyrics create the enthralling live on-stage presence for which the young artist is so well known.
Tickets for the concert, €25, are available online at www.eventbrite.ie (booking fees may apply), or locally from Cuppa Joe’s Castlebar. These are the ideal stocking filler for any music fan this Christmas.
