Breaffy’s Shona Tuohy was crowned first runner-up at the recent Miss Universe Ireland in Dublin. Shona (27) finished just behind the winner and the new Miss Universe Ireland, Fionnghuala O’Reilly from Dublin. The event took place in the Round Room in Dublin’s Mansion House on Thursday, August 1 last. Shona, who went forward as Miss Universe Mayo, was one of 28 contestants
in the show. The glamourous event was hosted by James Patrice and Brittany Mason, a director of Miss Universe. “I have to say it was a fantastic experience,” Shona told The Mayo News.
“I know people have perceptions of pageants, myself included, however, it really opened my eyes to how multifaceted this competition really is. “It allows the contestants to focus on our physical and mental health as well as creating a positive, inclusive platform for us to voice our opinions and support charities. I recently completed a Tough Mudder (adventure course event) in London in aid of Aoibheann’s Pink Tie.
“I was absolutely delighted with the result on the night. Coming first runner up is a huge achievement and to see my family and friends beaming with pride is all I could ask for! “I was just thankful that everything came together on the night, including the Top 5 question, which is answering questions on the spot about topical issues around the world today,” said Shona. Shona is a primary school teacher, who taught in Ireland for three years and has been teaching for the last two years in London. She is a daughter of Séamus and Marie Tuohy, Corheens, Breaffy. Séamus is Vice Chairman of the Mayo GAA Board.
