Hard to believe but Belmullet woman Sinead Diver started running just over six years ago. Originally from Corclough, Sinead is now due to represent her adopted nation Australia at the IAAF World Championships in Sinead moved to Australia in 2002 and wasn’t planning on staying permanently however each year found a different reason to stay and has being based in Melbourne for the past 13 years.
The 38 year old mother of two is one of the leading long distance runners in Australia and finished second in the Melbourne Marathon last year with a time which would have ranked her third in Ireland in 2014 and eight on the Irish all-time list. Sinead is married to Limerick man Colin and is the mother of two boys- Eddie, aged 5 and Dara, who is just 20 months old. After the birth of her son Eddie in 2010 Sinead made the decision to join a fortnightly team-based running challenge in a bid to get fit and lose some weight post pregnancy.
She found herself improving quite quickly and soon joined the Crosbie Crew, where she met her coach Tim Crosbie and she started to learn about proper training methods. It’s quite a difficult task but she manages to juggle motherhood, a career and In just under three months Sinead will be competing against some of the best athletes in the world and is up for the challenge and feels very fortunate to have been given the opportunity.
She was on the radar of Athletics Ireland and after the Melbourne marathon last year they registered her times in Ireland. Sinead still remains a member of Mayo Athletics Club and will wear the green and red in competitions overseas and in Australia. Although she would loved to run for Ireland, it came down to practicalities and as she lives and works in Melbourne, Australia came out on top.
Following the IAAF World Championships, Sinead will set her sights on the Olympics in Brazil. The competition to make the Australia team will be fierce but she is hoping her experience this summer will help her gain knowledge and understanding of the international stage and then perform at the highest possible level.
