Ballina Salmon Festival – Nephin Climb
Posted in Connect on June 26, 2015.
For so many of us, Nephin is practically in the back garden and we marvel at its remarkable beauty all year round. Come rain, shine or snow, it gives us locals something spectacular to look at every day. Yet, how many of us can say that we’ve actually taken the plunge and climbed it? The answer is surprisingly few! This is first year that Trek West Tours have teamed up with the Ballina Salmon Festival and included the Nephin Climb in the programme of events. So, why not give something a bit different a try and take advantage of this fantastic opportunity during this year’s festival? Round up your friends and family, lace up your boots and finally conquer the enigma that is Nephin on 11th July.
Standing at an impressive 806m tall, Nephin is the second highest mountain in Connaught after Mweelrea and is definitely the stand-out peak amongst Mayo’s Nephin Beg range. It’s a challenging climb that will take three to four hours to complete, but rest assured that one of our excellent guides will be there leading the way to the top. Your adventure will begin with a short trek across some of the area’s bog land, before you reach the slopes of the mountain and begin your ascent. As you climb, be sure to stop and take in the stunning Mayo countryside in all its glory as it unfolds beneath you. Once you reach the summit, all your hard work will be rewarded with panoramic three hundred and sixty degree views out across our beautiful county. Endless rolling green fields, iconic Irish bog land, the dazzling blue of Lough Conn, scattered country villages – there really is no better spot to appreciate our surroundings from!
The climb will take place on Saturday 11th July, beginning at 10am when a bus will be leaving from Trek West Tours’ office on Emmett Street in Ballina. Be sure to bring suitable footwear, rain gear (just in case!) and plenty of water. The cost is €40 for adults and €20 for children – remember to purchase your tickets via the Eventbrite link on our ‘Salmon Festival Nephin Climb’ event on our Facebook page. Or, for more information, feel free to contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org or call 096 76586. See you on 11th July!
