Ballina choir to sing with Gavin James

Dreams do come true and sometimes on the double – that was the lesson learned by members of the Moyne College secondary school choir in Ballina last Wednesday. The relatively-recently formed choir was still on a high that day, having learned almost a week ago they were the overall winners of the prestigious RTE 2fm #Ceol2018 national song contest but things were about to get a whole lot more exciting. The competition challenged schools to record their own version of any of the hit songs that had been specially recorded in Irish by the original artists that produced them for the #Ceol2018 CD. The recording was distributed to schools all over the country and Moyne College Irish teacher, Grace Carolan, proposed that the school take on the challenge.

She and the school’s music teacher, Tara Rouse, worked with the choir on their entry. The teachers and students decided to cover the Gavin James track ,“I gConai” (Always) featuring the full choir with soloists Louise Lang an and Shannon O’Malley and student musicians Mary Ruane (piano), Vincent Chambers (drums) and Jessica Rooney (guitar). Local sound engineer Ray Forde recorded the track for them and fellow student Kuba Adamczyk helped them film their own video to accompany the recording which they posted on the school’s Facebook page and which has already garnered over 30,000 views. Moyne College was duly declared the out – right winner of the national #Ceol2018 competition and decided to Tweet the good news to Gavin James , who replied back last Wednesday, congratulating the choir on its unreal achievement , leaving them dumbstruck with the following invitation: “ Do you all want to jump up on stage for the gig in the Royal Theatre Castlebar on the 29th of December. Have a little sing-song as Gaeilge?” he wrote. The answer couldn’t be anything but yes and so Moyne College choir members are set to ring out 2018 by performing live on stage with Gavin James in front of a potential crowd of 2,000 . It promises to be an unforgettable evening.

Pictures shows The Moyne College Choir under the musical direction of Tara Rouse will perform alongside Gavin James at his forthcoming concert in Castlebar on December
29, as winners of the national #Ceol2018 song contest. Absent from picture is Irish teacher, Grace Carolan, who encouraged the students to enter the competition.
