Ballina Band to headline Mayo Day Gala Concert in Manchester

The award winning Contemporary Irish Trad band ‘Flatout’ from Ballina in County Mayo are to fly over to Manchester to headline the UK’s Mayo Day Gala Concert onSaturday 2 May in St Mary’s Parish Centre in Levenshulme. The concert will showcase the very best of Mayo and Manchester music and dance talent and is being supported by Mayo.ie
Tony Hennigan the director of Mayo Manchester Tourism and Business group commented“We have been counting down the days since it was first announced just over twelve months ago that they were going to start an annual Mayo Day celebration. The concert will be a showcase for our forthcoming week long Mayo Manchester Music & Dance Tradfest that we hope to stage around the August bank holiday in North Mayo. Levenshulme village in South Manchester is home to one of the biggest Mayo Diaspora communities in the UK and they are hoping to turn that part of the city Green and Red for the whole weekend. The concert is part of a unique series of events to celebrate Ireland’s biggest County in the West of Ireland which is staging an annual one day festival called ‘Mayo Day’ around the globe. Mayo County Council and its Diaspora website www.mayo.iehave created this unique day which will be celebrated every year on the firstSaturday in May by emigrants in their own communities around the world.
The whole world is set to turn Green and Red, from Buffalo in New York State where they are lighting up the iconic Niagara Falls in the County Colours to Bondi Beach in Australia where they are staging a ‘Green and Red’ swimwear BBQ to back home in Mayo where Knock Airport will be providing a warm Mayo welcome to visitors flying in to join in a series of Cultural events and parties across the County.
With just five weeks to go until the inaugural Mayo Day on Saturday 2 May, Manchester has officially begun the countdown as one of the main hubs in the UK to be involved in the historic global celebration.
The Mayo Day concert will not only feature a performance by Flatout, but will include an Irish Dance display from the Mayo award winning Keegan Academy of Irish Dancing which is run by Lord of the Dance star – James Keegan and his sister Louise. It will also feature an exclusive performance from Mayo Country singer – Kevin Prendergast and the award winning Fianna Phadraig Pipe Band.

The weekend will also feature a Mayo Day Family Fun Day at Chorlton Irish Club by the Keegan Academy of Irish Dancing who are fundraising for their forthcoming trip to Mayo for the Mayo Manchester Tradfest which will staged from Thursday 30 July to Thursday 6 August.
