Murt Hunt from Lecarrow, Ballyhaunis, won €40,000 on the National Lottery Winning Streak Game on RTÉ last Saturday night.
It’s not the first time that Murt has been on a winning streak. Twelve years ago, he was one of the weekly winners of a trip to Rome which was a special promotion in association with Winning Streak and the Lottery. The group of winners were accompanied by Marty Whelan to Rome where they enjoyed a few wonderful days.
Around 17 years ago, Murt won a holiday to New York in a competition in The Sunday World. And he repeated that feat with another win, also in The Sunday World, when he scooped a trip to Toronto. “That was great too and I loved every minute of that trip,” says Murt.
Murt bought the lucky ticket in Murphy’s shop at Devlis on the Ballinlough road out of Ballyhaunis. Some days earlier, his youngest daughter, Áine, married Alan Egan from Bonniconlon. The occasion was made more special by the fact the couple, along with Murt’s granddaughter Ava, live in Boston.
As well as Áine, who had to fly back to Boston earlier in the week and could not make the show, Murt has six adult children: Marie, Carmel, Noelle, Sean and Murty jnr.
He was in Dillon’s, The Quays, Ballina, the previous Saturday night where members of the Hunt and Kelly families were enjoying a get-together after the wedding when the phone call came through saying his name had been drawn on Winning Streak.
“The texts and calls started flying in and we got the celebrations going in style after that. It has been a memorable fortnight for us all,” says Murt.
