Mayo: local resources targets six key sectors

Mayo County Council is building world-class expertise in six dynamic sectors identified by its Enterprise and Investment Unit as presenting significant opportunity. These are:

In focusing on harnessing this opportunity, the EIU’s aim for Mayo is to:

  • create sustainable employment opportunities
  • develop an identity and a brand that reflects its vision for the county
  • develop global and national positioning in key industry clusters
  • attract entrepreneurial talent and investment that delivers economic benefit to the county and its communities
  • be incredibly creative in how we introduce investors and entrepreneurs to Mayo. One great example can be watched below

Sector and cluster opportunities are likely to be concentrated in tourism, energy, food and agri diversification, ICT and creative industries.

A report commissioned by the EIU identifies a number of cross-sectoral opportunities that exist between these emerging sectors, such as, for example, the potential dependence of a large data centre on a co-located renewable energy facility. There will also be collaborative development between food and tourism sectors.

“There is a significant level of synergy between the identified emerging sectors and, conversely, little or no conflict between them,” the report said.

“Mayo can, with the right energy and focus, create in excess of 3,000 new jobs in these sectors over the next 10 years.”
