Waste reduction technologies developed by Mayo-based firm PEL are used around the world. The company, which is based in Balla [13km east of Castlebar], is a leading manufacturer of waste reduction equipment. Its range includes bottle crushers, bin compactors and balers for cardboard and plastics. The company’s innovative technologies are used in the hospitality, education, retail and healthcare sectors throughout Europe, Asia and the US, and by leading brands such as Radisson Hotels and McDonalds restaurants.

PEL was set up by Tommy Griffith, a mechanical engineering graduate from Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology, in 2005. The idea for the business was inspired by a nightclub owner complaining about the expense of storing and disposing of a large volume of bottles. The-fully patented PEL bottle crusher, which reduces waste volumes and cost by at least 60%, was the result. Now PEL has a range of products available in Ireland and international markets.

Its focus on in-house research and development, manufacturing and the application of engineering technology advancements remains a core part of PEL’s global success. It has enabled PEL to be at the cutting edge of product innovation, exporting to every continent while retaining jobs locally – a factor Tommy Griffith believes is vital to the company’s future.
