Mayo's start-up business scene is thriving

New Enterprises

“Having worked overseas for many years, we were amazed by all of the practical and financial supports available when we started our business in Mayo. There is a strong network of start-ups in the county, with a wonderful culture of openness and willingness to help each other out.”

With a strong pipeline of graduates from technology centres such as Galway Mayo Institute of TechnologyNational University of Ireland Galway and Institute of Technology Sligo, and start-up incubation programmes available from GMIT's Innovation Hub, Castlebar, Mayo has a thriving start-up eco-system that helps support new businesses such as cloud computing services company CloudStrong and 3D visualisation specialist Siscín.

As a result, Mayo is also attracting interest from international venture capitalists and technology experts.  Each year senior venture capital executives and technology start-ups gather in Mayo for the largest tech conference in Ireland outside of Dublin, the Surf Summit. Access to angel investors in the county is facilitated by organisations such as the business innovation centre WestBic, which is based in Galway. Mayo’s Local Enterprise Office helps start-ups become ‘investor ready’.
