About The Fire Service
Covering an area of 2,159 sq. miles and a population of approximately 137,970 people, Mayo Fire Service serves one of the largest geographical areas for a single fire service across the entire country.
Mayo Fire Service functions are carried out across three sections: Operational Fire Services, Technical Fire safety, and Community Fire Safety. In addition, Mayo Fire Service operates the Western Region Control Centre (WRCC) serving the local authorities of Connacht and County Donegal.
Operational Fire Service
Mayo Fire Service provides a 24/7/365 Operational Fire service from twelve fire stations strategically located throughout the county of Mayo.
Each fire brigade is under the command of a station officer, who has a sub-officer to assist and deputise for him in his absence. Each brigade has one or more driver mechanics, depending upon the number of appliances at a particular station. All members of the brigades are employed on a temporary part-time retained basis.

Technical Fire Safety
Mayo Fire Service has responsibility for ensuring that buildings are designed, constructed and maintained in a safe manner. Numerous fire officers are employed to look after public safety and process numerous applications such as Liquor Licences, Fire Safety Certificates and Lottery Licences. Fire Officers carry out inspections of buildings under the various acts and, are continuing their programme of random inspections of all premises types throughout the premises.
Community Fire Safety
Mayo Fire Service is committed to promoting awareness in its functional area through a range of Community Fire Safety (C.F.S.) activities and initiatives the aim of which is to involve the community in preventing death and injury resulting from fire and other incidents.
These C.F.S. initiatives are co-ordinated by a team of Senior and Junior fire officers and implemented with the assistance of the local fire brigade personnel, all working together as part of a team and reaching out to the community in which they serve
