Achill Island Film Festival

May 20 @ 12:00 am - May 22 @ 12:00 am

Ticket holders for the inaugural Achill Island Film Festival can expect to see a wide range of films from Ireland and around the world in some wonderful venues both indoor and, weather dependent, outdoors! They will get to enjoy the island in between watching a programme of superb films that they can pick and choose from, or see them all! We received many high-quality projects and it has genuinely been a difficult task to whittle it down for the time we have over the weekend of screenings. Attendees can expect to choose from fascinating documentaries, exclusive films, featuring a range of themes including extremely up to date commentary on the two years we all just went through. There will be panel discussions and Q&A's as well as live music and plenty of craic! Achill as we know is a special spot and we are excited for first time visitors to see the beauty here and enjoy the world class Achill hospitality. There will be parties, industry guests to have a pint with, an awards ceremony and some surprises too. We received nearly 200 submissions from 17 countries, all of differing subject matters. We received entries from Iran, Egypt, Iceland among others and of course, several from Ireland. The standard is so high. I had the help of 5 other judges to assist me in deciding on the films to programme which I am very grateful for! Considering the beauty of our country, it is unsurprising that Ireland has attracted Hollywood for many years and not just for the tax breaks! Dublin and Wicklow in particular are frequently used as locations and I reckon that more and more production companies will be looking west for unseen spots over the next few years. During Autumn 2021, two big features were filmed here in and around Achill (My Sailor, My Love and Banshees Of Inisheerin). It was a remarkable sight to see so many crew and cast buzzing around the island with the locals benefitting hugely from room and restaurant bookings. I have shown locations here in Achill recently to Location Managers from upcoming TV and Film projects who have been utterly blown away by the unspoilt scenery. Of course, none of this is a surprise to those who have visited here before! This festival puts Achill and Mayo on the map for the industry around the world and we expect it to grow and grow exponentially. It really is clear to see why it would be a top class spot for movie-making and also the island is much larger than people may think!
