Road Safety Road Show Returns Virtually To Educate Young Road Users

Date: 11-03-2021

The hard-hitting road show, which educates teens about the terrible consequences of road carnage is returning to Mayo on Thursday, 22nd April. Normally over 1500 students would travel to Breaffy House to view this show but due to Covid- 19 restrictions it will be delivered virtually this year.  Transition Year students from 29 secondary schools and Youthreach centres across the county will view the road safety show virtually by registering at https://mayoeducationcentre.ie/cpd-courses/post-primary-courses/180-road-safety-roadshow-in-association-with-mayo-county-council.html.

Mayo County Council, in association with AXA Insurance and Mayo Education Centre, is issuing an invitation to the public to view the show, which will be streamed live on Mayo County Council Facebook and through Zoom into schools.

Noel Gibbons, Road Safety Officer with Mayo County Council, explained: “The roadshow has been running in Mayo since 2007 and has proved to be very informative. It depicts graphically how a night out ended in tragedy and permanent disability for one young driver”.

“The Roadshow is aimed at transition year students and the objective of the show is to encourage young road users, and those about to commence their driving career, to adopt a more responsible attitude in terms of their own driving behaviour. The consequences should they fail to do so will be clearly and graphically demonstrated”.

During the show, young people will have an opportunity to benefit from presentations made by An Garda Síochána (Garda Hugh McHugh of Castlebar Garda Station), the National Ambulance Service (Derek Walsh), Mayo Fire Service (Mr Pete Mc Donnell), a consultant based within A&E Department in Mayo University Hospital in Castlebar (Mr Paul O'Grady ), a family member of a deceased road traffic accident victim (Mrs Ann Flynn ) and a car crash survivor (Richard Alcorn).

We believe that this is a very worthwhile event, which will hopefully leave a lasting positive impression on the young people present.

Michael McKenzie, Director, Mayo Education Centre said "Mayo Education Centre is delighted to support this event which brings the ever-present issue of road safety to the fore for teenagers, and helps to make our roads safer for everybody”.

The show will be streamed at 11am on 22nd April 2021 and members of the public are welcome to view it also.
