Mayo Community Covid-19 Forum – Update on support work to date

Date: 17-04-2020

The Mayo Community Covid-19 Forum set up several subgroups to divide the ongoing community outreach work in response to the pandemic. At this week’s meetings there was feedback from the groups that great positive engagement is being felt from the community in Mayo and that the balanced, steady approach across the agencies, the community and the voluntary groups are serving the county well.

The message for the weekend from the Community Covid-19 Forum is that efforts across the county are having a positive effect and are saving lives. The forum members thank the public for their effort, ongoing social distancing, and their selfless efforts to remain within the 2km limits to keep their families and friends safe. They also want to remind people that the weekend is a good time to have a chat or check-in on vulnerable people and relatives, and if needed, give the helpline a call.

As the weekend approaches Garda Superintendent Kevin Gately confirmed at the Community Safety subgroup that the Gardaí will continue to engage with the public over the weekend. This will include visiting vulnerable people and supporting those living alone who may need some help at this time. He also advises for everyone to be wary of potential scams, and if in doubt, do not give personal or bank or bank to anyone. Instead to call the Community Helpline 094 9064660 to make them aware of any unwanted approaches you or your neighbours might have received.

Liam Hanrahan, Mayo County Council advised at the subgroup that the work undertaken by An Post, Alone and the various community groups across the county have created a foundation of work that underpins the Community Helpline operation. Allowing the helpline staff to engage with people directly, advising them on issues and linking them to local groups in their locality to help them with day-to-day services.

The Community Helpline is 094 9064660 continues to operate Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm
