Home Loan Mortgage Payment Break

Date: 01-07-2020

Mayo County Council have been directed under Circular 18/2020 dated 26th June 2020, to offer local authority borrowers who consider themselves to be in need of the financial support, related to the continuing COVID-19 situation, the option of a further additional mortgage repayment break for 3 months.

As set out in Circular 9/2020, a mortgage payment break means that the borrower will make no mortgage payments for 3 months. Additional interest will NOT accrue to the borrowers account during the period of the payment break ensuring that no increased cost will arise. The monthly repayment following the break will be increased to facilitate the repayment of the loan over the remainder of the existing term of the loan.

The additional mortgage repayment break will allow for a mortgage repayment break to a maximum of 6 months. Borrowers who have been approved for an initial mortgage repayment break can now avail of the option of extending the break up to a maximum of 6 months. Borrowers who have yet to apply for an initial mortgage repayment break can do so for an initial 3 months and will have an option to extend the break to a maximum of 6 months.

A closing date of the 30th September 2020 has been imposed as the last date for applications for an initial mortgage repayment break.

The Department of Housing, Planning and Local Government have published an updated frequently asked questions document on the mortgage repayment break. Please see below.
