Community Development


  • Community Action Plan Consultation

    Mayo County Council can prepare plans to outline their policies and objectives for community development including the renovation of unsightly areas and derelict buildings, development of greenways, walkways, transport and roads, and to encourage people to become active in their communities. Members of the public can have input into these plans through consultation.

  • Community and Voluntary Awards Scheme

    Mayo County Council can run schemes to acknowledge, award and celebrate community and voluntary groups for their positive contribution to community life.

  • Community Centres Management

    Mayo County Council, in cooperation with community groups, can provide and manage community centres in housing estates which provide a range of services to the community including childcare facilities, meals on wheels, job preparation and sporting facilities.

  • Community Development Initiatives

    Mayo County Council can provide financial assistance and support to community and voluntary groups, residents associations, Tidy Towns groups and local development associations who take part in initiatives such as Places in Bloom, Bee-friendly in Bloom, anti-litter and environmental improvement initiatives and gardening projects.

  • Community Employment (CE) Scheme

    Mayo County Council can support schemes to help people who are long-term unemployed or otherwise disadvantaged to get back to work by offering part-time and temporary placements in jobs based within local communities.

  • Community Facilities Support

    Mayo County Council can provide support to community and voluntary groups who operate community facilities such as community, resource, youth and drop-in centres to provide services to the public including active ageing activities, childcare, homework clubs and leisure activities.

  • Community Gardens Provision

    Mayo County Council can provide community gardens to offer people at risk of social exclusion a space to develop new skills, meet new people and improve their physical and mental health and wellbeing through gardening activities.

  • Community Plan Consultation

    Mayo County Council can prepare plans to outline their policies and objectives for the development of projects to enhance local amenities and services in designated towns and villages. Members of the public can have input into these plans through consultation.

  • Hinterland Initiative

    Mayo County Council can work with local communities to develop projects in designated towns and villages surrounding specific regeneration areas to support their social and economic development by providing community playgrounds, parks, greenways and sports facilities.

  • Local Development Strategy Consultation

    Local Action Groups (LAGs) prepare strategies to outline their policies and objectives to support and promote economic development, social inclusion and the rural environment in designated rural areas. Members of the public can have input into these strategies through consultation.

  • Local Economic and Community Plan (LECP) Consultation

    Mayo County Council, in conjunction with Local Community Development Committees (LCDCs) and other relevant stakeholders, prepare plans to outline their policies and objectives to promote and support local economic and community development over a six-year period. Members of the public can have input into these plans through consultation.

  • Revitalising Areas through Planning, Investment and Development (RAPID) Programme

    Mayo County Council, in conjunction with other agencies, can run development programmes to support training and employment, business and social enterprise, education, environmental and age-friendly initiatives and children and youth projects to address disadvantage in designated areas.

  • Rural Development Forums Support

    Mayo County Council can establish and support forums to allow community and voluntary groups, local development bodies, public representatives and state agencies to work together to address challenges facing rural communities including job creation, improved transport and access to broadband and respond to them by developing strategies to influence council policy and decision-making.

  • Rural Development Initiatives

    Mayo County Council can develop initiatives to attract people to live and work in rural communities by developing enterprise and employment opportunities, transport initiatives, broadband services, digital hubs and e-working spaces to help support and develop rural communities.

  • Rural Development Strategy Consultation

    Rural Development Forums can prepare strategies to outline their policies and objectives for improving the quality of life in rural communities by developing enterprise and employment opportunities, education, housing, transport and the delivery of digital and age-friendly services. Members of the public can have input into these strategies through consultation.

  • Town Twinning Programme

    Mayo County Council can run or facilitate programmes to help local communities develop links with other locations to gain a better understanding of nationalities and cultures, develop partnerships with international communities and advance business and commercial opportunities for the twinned locations.
