The National Museum of Ireland - Country Life is the only part of Ireland’s national museum sited outside Dublin and is located in Turlough Park, 8km north east of Castlebar. It is devoted to telling the story of Irish country life between 1850 and 1950: a world nostalgic to older visitors and a wonderland to be discovered by younger ones.
Utilising the national folklife collection, Ireland’s recent past is brought to life over the museum’s four floors. There you can see through displays of clothing, farming tools, craft implements and items related to pastimes, religion, education, hunting, fishing, trades, calendar customs and agriculture. You can also learn about harvest knots, wickerwork and spinning wheels here.
The museum also includes a great café and a fine 800-year-old round tower.
